'Polder landscape with hay-stack and windmill',
Watercolour, 14 x 22 cm,
Signed: lower left 'v.bauffe'

Victor Bauffe (1849-1921)

About the in Mons (Belgium) born Victor Bauffe is said, that he paints so well in water colours that he equals the work of his teacher Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch: their aquarelles are only distinguishable by the signature. Quote from the Dictionnaire E. Bénézit (1976): 'His water colours are characterized by the accuracy of the perspective and the freshness of the colours.' Elsewhere we read that Bauffe was particularly virtuoso in reproducing impressive air parties in beautiful colours, which faithfully show the meteorological circumstances. Indeed, this small aquarelle grabs you from the first moment because of the oppressive atmosphere of threatening approaching rain clouds and storms.

Together with Willem Johannes Weissenbruch and the son of his teacher Bauffe frequently travels through the polders around The Hague to lay down beautiful spots like this one. He also dwells regularly in Kortenhoef, as mentioned in 'Schildersdorpen van Nederland' (2004). Around 1900 the picturesque Kortenhoef (west of Hilversum) develops namely to an artists' village. It is a coming and going of painters. The guest house 'Het Rechthuis', opposite the church, becomes a true shelter and meeting place for artists.

In a historical catalogue of the Groninger Museum are 87 paintings and watercolours mentioned that Geesje Mesdag van Calcar after the death of her husband Taco (in 1902) has donated to the museum, including three works of Victor Bauffe. Paintings made by Bauffe, who was educated at the Academy of Art in The Hague, are also in possession of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch and the Montreal Museum (Canada).
